Happy new year! It has been a while since we have had any reviews and this will be our first for 2019! Between making films and watching them, we're back! Now, on to business.
Skyscraper is one of those adrenaline-rush kinda movies; do not watch this looking for Oscar-consideration quality. That said, this is an easy watch and one that will not have you taking bathroom breaks until the credits roll. As usual, Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) believably pulls off his action role as Will Sawyer, a husband and father of 2 pulled into a mess of action. The script is as hollow as they come and cliche to the teeth but that does not stop you from wondering what Will Sawyer will do next. The Rock is actually one of the most bankable actors in the world and this picture's box office results are further testimony to this - making $304 million from a budget of $125 million.
Neve Campbell also gives a more than fair performance as Sawyer's wife, though, for me, this would not rank as any of her top 5 best appearances. Her role as LeAnn Harvey in House of Cards still remains one of my favourites. As I always say with such movies, this is a genre-specific kind of film - one which would always be enjoyed by action flick buffs but less than tolerated by anyone else short of a film lover. Dwayne seems to be at a crescendo in his career but I wish he'd land more scripts with the depth of Gridiron Gang, scripts that would milk-out his acting abilities giving audiences the best he has to offer.
